Demolition Disaster
Introduction
Demolition Disaster is a local multiplayer game for PC in which up to 4 players battle each other on hovering vehicles in a post-apocalyptic arena scenario.
The players each get to choose one of four unique characters riding on their hovering vehicles. The movement is fast and reactive and offers a unique feel of hover boarding. Everyone can shoot, dash and use a strong special ability unique to each character.
This fast-paced gameplay paired with its variety of abilities and easily learned controls makes Demolition Disaster a great game to play with friends.
Development
We developed Demolition Disaster as a student project over a period of 6 weeks using Unity 5. Our team Texelshift consisted of 10 Game Design students at the Mediadesign University Munich.
My Role
I worked on Demolition Disaster as a programmer. My primary contributions to the project were:
- Character Movement:
I designed and implemented a system realizing smooth, fast and reactive movement and controls. The main challenge here was making the vehicles feel like they were hovering, while retaining the reactivnes and controllability required by this game.
We underwent multiple iterations until we settled on this final system which combines low friction gliding with precise curves and includes the abilitiy to rotate while gliding for sharp turns and aiming as well as the ability to drift around curves to further manipulate the curve radius. - Game states, modes and management:
The system managing the various game modes and their respective states and conditions as well as the modes themselves were also created by me. While the final game only include three modes (Battle mode, practice mode and showdown) which were not directly selectable but depending on player number and scores, the system supports a high variety of game modes with different winning conditions, constraints, assets etc. - Score and Stat tracking:
During each game, various stats and events are tracked. This information is used after each round to determine a score and the winner(s) of the round depending on the respective game mode. This system allows for a big variety of winning and losing conditions as well as presenting the players additional stats to increase the games competitivenes. - Menus:
All menus in Demolition Disaster are presented on the screen cube hanging above the arena. It has menus on multiple sides and can change each screens content to display more menus. This creates a visually appealing and unique system while retaining easy usability and fast transitions. Most of the menus functionality was also implementex by me. - Other stuff:
Additionally I worked on animation integration and blending, game design and other minor contributions.
